Spooktober Fun: Family-Friendly Activities to Get Excited for Halloween

By Sheila Alston

October is here, and what better way to gear up for Halloween than by diving into some fun, festive activities that the whole family can enjoy? From creative costume swaps to spooky movie nights, these ideas will get everyone in the Halloween spirit and build excitement all month long!

Host a Costume Exchange

Instead of buying a new costume, gather the kids (and their friends) for a costume swap. This is a great way for children to exchange costumes with friends or older siblings, giving old costumes new life while saving some money. Set up a fun little "shop" in your living room or backyard where the kids can browse, try on costumes, and find their perfect spooky look!

Create DIY Halloween Décor

Get crafty with the family and make your own Halloween decorations. Paper bats, painted pumpkins, and DIY ghost lanterns can turn your home into a festive haunted house. This is a great weekend project, and it’s even more fun when everyone helps decorate!

Have a Spooky Movie Countdown

Build anticipation by watching a different Halloween-themed movie each weekend. For younger kids, go for lighthearted films like Hotel Transylvania or Coco. For teens or adults, classics like Beetlejuice or The Nightmare Before Christmas will add some spooky fun. Make it special with themed snacks and cozy blankets!

Organize a Pumpkin Carving Night

Pumpkin carving is a Halloween staple. Gather the family for a night of creative carving—whether it’s scary faces, cute designs, or intricate patterns. Turn it into a contest with categories like "Funniest Pumpkin" or "Scariest Face." Don't forget to roast the pumpkin seeds for a tasty treat!

Plan a Spooky Scavenger Hunt

Create a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt around the house or yard. Hide spooky trinkets like mini pumpkins, toy spiders, or candy, and give the kids clues to find them. This can be a fun afternoon activity or even part of a Halloween party for the family.

Cook Up Some Ghoulish Goodies

Get into the Halloween spirit by cooking festive foods. Let the kids help bake and decorate spooky cupcakes, or prepare a "monster mash" dinner with mummy hot dogs, spiderweb pizzas, and ghost-shaped cookies. It’s a delicious way to spend time together while celebrating the season!

Read Ghost Stories by Candlelight

Set the mood for a spooky night by reading classic ghost stories by candlelight. Whether you choose The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or a collection of spine-chilling short stories, use your best ghoulish voice to bring the stories to life. This eerie yet cozy tradition is a great way to wind down the evening with a bit of Halloween fright.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch or Local Fall Festival

October is the perfect time to take a family outing to a pumpkin patch or fall festival. Many local events feature hayrides, corn mazes, and pumpkin picking. It’s a fun way to spend a day outdoors, enjoy the crisp fall weather, and get into the Halloween spirit.

With these fun activities, you can stretch the Halloween excitement through the entire month of October. From swapping costumes to spooky scavenger hunts and ghost stories by candlelight, there’s something for every member of the family to enjoy—and plenty of ways to make this Halloween one to remember!
